Cappy's Chowder House

restaurant_image      The first time I visited Cappy's it was my first time in Camden and this cozy chowder house on the corner of Main St. turned out to be an excellent discovery. At that time my companion and I each had a delicious lunch. The salad was gigantic and served with homemade dressing, and my grilled chicken sandwich was accompanied by crunchy seasoned spiral fries.

We chose to return to Cappy's not only in remembrance of our last lunch, but because they feature multiple varieties of Shipyard on tap. According to my companion, nothing compares to the taste of Fuggles IPA on tap. We met up with some family members for a late lunch and started with a heaping platter of nachos with salsa, beef, black olives and sour cream. The beef was a bit dry but we polished off the entire plate.

I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with a side of spiral fries. The sandwich was good, but my fries were extremely disappointing - undercooked and unseasoned. My companion chose the crab cakes which he termed 'average' but came atop a fantastic salad with red peppers and zucchini. The homemade salad dressing is also excellent. The remaining two members of our party went with the chowder, steamed mussels, and the crab melt. The chowder was great and came with a nice looking biscuit in addition to a large bowl of crackers. The mussels were steamed with tomatoes and green olives - a surprisingly pleasing combination. Served on toasted marble bread, the crab melt looked disappointing but proved satisfactory to the palette.

Overall this particular visit to Cappy's was a bit disappointing. Our meals were satisfactoy but non-memorable. While the service was ok, one of the lunches came out of the kitchen a good five minutes after the rest of us were served. Despite the lure of Fuggles on tap, we will probably try someplace new the next time we make it to Camden.
