Mama DiMatteo's

restaurant_image      Mama's has been a frequent destination for my dinner companion and I this year. Their expanded summer menu kept us well occupied, and the winter menu continues to bring us back.

On this occasion we both started with salads. I had the house salad with home-made Bleu Cheese dressing. I always choose the Blue Cheese - it is dense and creamy and overflowing with flavor. My companion had one of that night's specials, an innovative salad of avacado and crab on a bed of baby greens. Loaded with crab, the avacado portion of the salad was a generous serving. In addition, it came with a side salad of fresh tomatoes marinated in basil and olive oil.

While neither of us had any appetizers this time out, Mama's selection includes delicious crab-stuffed mushrooms, baked baby Brie with pesto and roasted red peppers served with crackers, ribs, skillet mussels with fresh tomato and basil, and crab cake with roasted red pepper cream sauce. The salad selection also includes a traditional Caesar and a spinach salad with warm viniagrette dressing.

The special board featured a cracked-pepper seared sirloin that a friend of ours raved over the last time he was there. However, my dining companion chose to go with the soup special - a curried chicken topped with shaved coconut on top. It was the perfect meal for recovering from a cold - warm, hearty and delicious, the trend with Mama's soups. I digressed from my sual - the endless pasta bowl of fettucine alfredo (a rich, creamy delight), and chose the Tuscan Chicken (there is also a Tuscan Sirloin on the menu). Two tender breasts of chicken rubbed in spice mix and topped with Gorgonzola butter come with your choice of spaghetti marinara or parmesan mashed potatoes and a vegetable. I went with the mashed potatoes and the vegetable was carrots. The flavors in this dish mesh well and have made it one of my favorites.

We both passed up dessert, but if you have room don't pass over Cass's tiramisu.

Mama's opens at 5 Tuesday throught Saturday. Join them early for Happy Hour and drink specials before dinner. At Mama's, you're always among friends.
