Monday, November 01, 1999

SAINT JOHN/BANGOR – November 1, 1999 – Aliant Inc., parent company of Atlantic Canada’s major telecommunications providers, today announced it is expanding its Internet business into the New England market. Aliant has signed a purchase and sale agreement with AcadiaNet Inc., an Ellsworth-based Internet company with 6,000 customers.

“We’re pleased to welcome all 30 employees from AcadiaNet to the Aliant group of companies. They bring essential Internet and new media skills, e-commerce capabilities, and an in-depth knowledge of the Maine marketplace. All of these are important to our company because we hope to grow larger by combining the power of our cross-border capabilities,” said Gerry Pond, President of IT and Emerging Business, Aliant.

David Irvin, President of AcadiaNet, said the sale of the business is a significant step forward in AcadiaNet’s future. “This transaction will give our employees many opportunities for career growth and development in this ever-changing industry. We’re excited to join Aliant, a company with a proven track record in telecommunications and information technology. Our team is genuinely enthusiastic about the many opportunities Aliant will bring to our community.”

Mr. Irvin will continue to assume a senior leadership role, contributing to Aliant’s growth strategy in helping expand the company’s Internet market throughout Maine and New England, and in building upon Aliant’s existing Internet base of more than 155,000 customers.

“This agreement will benefit our customers by way of enhanced customer service levels, improved packaging, and easier access to the latest in communications and entertainment products,” Mr. Irvin said. “AcadiaNet, with Aliant’s strong support, will engage in an aggressive marketing campaign, and we’re looking forward to serving our customers with exciting new promotions as early as Christmas – giving them greater choice and flexibility for their communications needs.”

Since 1995 AcadiaNet has offered customers both dependable and economical access to the Internet, as well as the most effective, fully functional web site presence available. Serving Downeast, Midcoast and Eastern Maine, AcadiaNet offers a full line of Internet services, including web site design and hosting, networking solutions, high-speed Internet access, domain registration and site activity analysis. AcadiaNet gives its customers full Internet assistance through telephone support, educational seminars and training workshops.
