There can be a Scenic Byway, spanning from the head of Mount Desert Island through Bar Harbor and up along Acadia National Park and it's Loop Road, if voters so decide.
Last week the town councilors received a final version of the plan, which has taken a long time to develop. It is almost complete now and ready for voters to have their say in the matter.
The plan is designed to maintain the scenic and rural character along Route 3 and the Park Loop Road. This area is the gateway to Acadia National Park, which is the eigth most visited National Park, consistently drawing over 3 million visitors a year. The plan is designed to preserve the region's distinctive features, and documents the recreational assets of the area, as well as the natural, historical and cultural.
If voters favor the plan as a whole, the town can be eligible for more grants if the route gains state and federal designation. If approved, the town will form a management committee that will oversee the implementation of the plan, and also keep the public informed about the changes.
