The breakwater lighthouse, perched at the end of a 4,400 foot granite jetty, was completed in 1902. The lighthouse was staffed by Keepers of the U.S. Lighthouse Service until 1939. At that time the Coast Guard took over until the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1963. In 1998, under the Maine Lights program, the city of Rockland was given the lighthouse.

The Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse have taken on the job of raising money and recruiting volunteers to fully refurbish and furnish the keeper's house which has been uninhabited since the lighthouse was automated in 1964. The Friends intend to open the premises to the public, adding a ramp and float for boat access. The breakwater facility will be a replica of a 1950 keeper's house with period furnishings.

There is an overall need to raise $250,000 to renovate the lighthouse, and another $250,000 to establish an endowment. To find out more about the fundraising efforts and the history of the breakwater lighthouse, visit the Friend's website at www.midcoast.com/~brkwater.
