Searsport Church Window Preservation
Originally built in 1819 and organized as 1st Congregation Church of West
Prospect, the church was
re-named in 1855 as the 2nd Congregational Church of Searsport. Nine Tiffany
stained glass windows
were installed in 1904 to 1906. The project was paid for by Eugene Pendleton
Carver with his cousin, John Carver Blanchard as the interior finish
carpenter. In 1906 the newly restored church was rededicated with its
beautiful windows. In 1949, the Maine State Legislature confirmed the
corporation "2nd Congregational Church Society of the Harbor, Searsport,
Maine."
Due to condensation and expansion and contraction from the sun and cold the
windows are deteriorating. While the ultimate preservation of these windows
would be the removal, restoration and reinstallation of all 9 windows, we
realize the cost of doing the same would be prohibitive. As an alternative,
the goal is to preserve the windows by installing exterior low E glass
windows over them, with drainage holes for condensation runoff. A rough
estimate of the cost is $100,000.
The Searsport Bed & Breakfast Association is doing everything it can to
bring attention to these
windows and to raise funds for their preservation. To find out how you can
